The inspector’s account

During an interview with S3, it was stated that the medication cabinet is kept locked at all times and that the Medication Administration Record (MAR) is completed each time medication is distributed to a client.

During interviews with S1 and S2, it was revealed that all staff have been trained in medication administration, including the importance of securing all medications in a locked cabinet and accurately completing the MAR when administering medication to each client. S1 stated that the facility has not experienced any medication errors. S2 confirmed that medications have always been stored in a locked cabinet and that there have been no medication errors at the facility.

Allegation: Client's MAR (Medication Administrator Record) was not accurately kept.

Record reviews conducted of C1 and C2 Medication Administration Record (MAR) indicated that during the months of May and June 2024, there were no missed medications or incidents of incorrect medication administration for either client. It was also noted in C1’s medication Administration form (LIC 602) that C1 is able to self-administrator and store their own medication. During the facility tour, LPAs confirmed that the medication cabinet located in the kitchen was locked. LPAs also reviewed medication labels for C1 and C2, which were found to be accurate and properly labeled.

Allegation: Centrally stored medications are unlocked and accessible to clients.

LPAs conducted a tour of the facility and observed that centrally stored medications were maintained in a locked medication cabinet and were not accessible to clients in care it was found that the medication cabinet was locked and inaccessible to all clients in care. During interviews staff members S1, S3 and S3 stated that all staff have received training regarding medication storage requirements and are instructed to ensure that all centrally stored medications remain locked at all times.
